Punjab Enforces 3-Day Weekly Lockdown Amid Escalating Smog Crisis

The Punjab provincial government has declared a full lockdown on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in Lahore and Multan due to the worsening smog situation.

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that if air quality levels do not show improvement by Wednesday, the lockdown may be imposed earlier.

Rising Concerns Over Air Quality

During a press briefing in Lahore, Minister Aurangzeb underscored the critical pollution levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore surpassing 2800—a figure categorized as hazardous.

The lockdown aims to reduce outdoor activities and limit the movement of people, vehicles, and businesses that contribute to air pollution, especially in areas most affected by smog.

The Need for Immediate Action

The government’s decision to enforce a 3-day lockdown follows a significant rise in smog levels, which have reached alarming levels and are impacting public health. Hospitals have reported a surge in patients, with over 40,000 individuals currently receiving treatment for smog-related ailments.

The move seeks to safeguard public health, particularly vulnerable groups, and mitigate further respiratory issues. Minister Aurangzeb highlighted that temporary closures of businesses, educational institutions, and public activities could help reduce pollution and improve air quality.

Measures Under the Lockdown

  • Industrial Shutdown: All brick kilns and furnace plants in Lahore and Multan will close from Friday to help curb emissions.
  • Dining Restrictions: Restaurants will serve dine-in customers only until 4 pm, after which only takeaway services will be permitted.
  • Educational Shifts: Schools, colleges, and universities will transition to online classes, and all construction activities will be suspended.

Appeal for Public Support

The government has called on citizens to comply with these measures, including wearing masks, to help combat the smog crisis. Minister Aurangzeb urged the public to stay indoors and minimize non-essential outdoor activities during the weekends.

“We must all contribute to reducing smog exposure,” she noted. “This lockdown can only be effective if everyone adheres to the guidelines and restricts unnecessary activities.”
