The Punjab government has extended school closures for another week as smog levels in Lahore and Multan continue to pose serious health risks. This measure comes in response to the region’s escalating air pollution crisis, which has reached hazardous levels and triggered a state of emergency.
Shift to Online Education and Restaurant Restrictions
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that schools would remain shut while colleges and universities transition to online classes to minimize exposure to toxic air. Additionally, restaurants have been ordered to close by 4 PM, though takeaway services can operate until 8 PM to support limited dining options during this critical period.
Smog Crisis Becomes Public Health Emergency
Highlighting the severity of the situation, the minister noted that smog has become a full-blown public health crisis, necessitating the cancellation of all leaves for hospital staff and the setup of specialized health desks. Public health experts have reported an alarming surge in respiratory illnesses, with over 40,000 residents receiving treatment for smog-related conditions.
Aurangzeb strongly urged residents to stay indoors whenever possible and to wear protective masks if outdoor activities are necessary. “The current smog emergency demands collective action from both the government and the public,” she emphasized.
Long-Term Strategy and Immediate Actions
To tackle the root causes of smog, the government has initiated a comprehensive 10-year plan while also implementing immediate actions over the next three months. These efforts include dismantling brick kilns that do not comply with eco-friendly zigzag technology, aimed at reducing particulate emissions.
The minister pointed out that addressing the smog crisis is a long-term challenge, but assured the public that interdepartmental teams are working tirelessly to mitigate its effects. The immediate measures are focused on protecting public health and reducing pollution levels.
City-Wide Lockdowns and Construction Ban
Minister Aurangzeb also announced a strict lockdown in Lahore and Multan, which will be enforced on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This lockdown includes a ban on all construction activities until the following Sunday as part of the government’s efforts to curb pollution.
Public Urged to Cooperate
The government has appealed for public cooperation in following these restrictions, including adhering to mask mandates and limiting outdoor activities to essential needs only. “We must all play our part in reducing exposure to smog,” the minister said. “These emergency measures can only succeed if the public follows the guidelines and supports our collective fight against air pollution.”
