In a move to aid farmers and minimize the role of intermediaries, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz unveiled the “Kisan Card” program in Hafizabad on Monday. This initiative is designed to provide direct benefits to farmers and streamline support.
At the launch event, several Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, including Rana Sanaullah and Maryam Aurangzeb, were present as the cards were distributed to farmers.
Maryam Nawaz shared that the scheme was initially conceived by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who could not attend due to commitments abroad. She emphasized the government’s dedication to farmer welfare, highlighting policies aimed at addressing rising wheat prices and ensuring fair profit margins for farmers.
Acknowledging past criticism for delayed wheat procurement, she reassured attendees of the government’s focus on supporting farmers’ livelihoods. Maryam Nawaz also announced an upcoming “Green Tractor Scheme,” with an expected 1.5 million applications, which will provide subsidies up to Rs1 million for tractors costing around Rs4 million.
To further assist farmers, the government plans to establish machinery hubs in each tehsil, backed by an allocation of Rs10-15 billion, allowing farmers to rent equipment affordably. Additionally, efforts are underway to solarize 7,000 tube wells currently using diesel and petrol, which will help reduce energy costs and lower electricity bills for the farming community.
